About the ASME allowable stress data

This lookup searches the maximum allowable stress values, S, for ferrous materials listed in ASME BPVC Section II, Part D, Table 1A, the values used for Section VIII, Division 1 design.

Enter a material specification (for example SA-106 or SA-516) and a design temperature to get the allowable stress, see how it falls with temperature, and compare suitable materials.

Formulas

Linear interpolation between tabulated temperatures
S = S₁ + (S₂ − S₁) · (T − T₁) / (T₂ − T₁)
SAllowable stress at the design temperature T
T₁, T₂Tabulated temperatures immediately below and above T
S₁, S₂Tabulated allowable stresses at T₁ and T₂

Limitations and design notes

  • The database is based on the ASME 2013 electronic stress tables (metric). Allowable stresses change between code editions, so always confirm values against the edition specified for your project.
  • Check the Table 1A notes for each line (for example the G, T and W notes) for restrictions on product form, temperature limits and welded construction.
  • Values are for Section VIII, Division 1. Division 2 and other construction codes use different tables.
